Suite Tuba was written in honor of my doctoral advisor and applied instructor from Arizona State University, J. Samuel Pilafian. Although Sam is best known in the brass world for his ground-breaking performances as the tuba player and founding member of the Empire Brass Quintet, he was also the primary arranger and business manager for Empire for nearly 20 years. He is also an incredible teacher, who has trained thousands of musicians around the world. Sam had a profound impact on my career in all four areas, that is, as a player, a composer and arranger, entrepreneur and teacher. This composition is designed to reflect different elements of training and studying with Sam.

I am deeply grateful to the friends and colleagues who joined the commissioning consortium to help create this work. They are:

Impromptu for Tuba and Band by Darroll Barry, arranged by Thomas Bough

This exciting, fresh solo for tuba and band accompanied is relatively unknown in the United States, although it is popular in European Brass Band circles. The tuba solo part requires a very advanced player, with a wide range and fluid technique. The band parts are written at a Grade 4 or 4.5 level of difficulty, and include brief solos for several instruments. Multiple time signature changes, rapid harmonic shifts, and moments of technical challenges for most band players will require an investment of rehearsal time in this roughly 8 minute work. However, the reward will be a vibrant performance by the band, a truly different musical experience for the audience, and a chance to inspire the low brass players by featuring a tuba soloist. Thomas Bough performed the as the soloist at the initial performance of this arrangement with Oswego High School (Oswego, Illinois) in 2008. To order this piece, please contact Thomas Bough.

Pembroke Rondo (available from Cimarron Music Press)

This composition for solo tuba and low brass ensemble was commissioned by Dr. Joanna Hersey of UNC-Pembroke. As the name suggests, the form of the composition is a rondo, that combines themes of various musical styles and durations. The solo part is written for a professional player, but the ensemble parts could be performed by advanced high school students or young college players.
