Solemn Madrigals

The title tells the tale; this arrangement combines two wonderfully slow, beautiful madrigals from the late-Renaissance master Orlando Gibbons. It begins with the familiar, haunting melody of "Silver Swan", then transitions to the lesser known "Ah, Dear Heart." Scoring alternates between full ensemble and quasi-chamber moments for the woodwinds and brass. Although the music offers lots of opportunities for expression and interpretation, the level of technical difficulty is relatively low, no more than a Grade 3.5. This arrangement can serve as a wonderful introduction to the music of Gibbons, one of the leading English composers of his day.
